Are you surrounding yourself with the right kinds of people?
One thing I've learned in business and in life is that it's vital to my success as a person and a business owner to only keep company or surround myself with people who are good for me.
This has a lot to do with marketing too if you think about it because it comes back to your target market - who is that ideal type of customer that you want to work with? A few of you might not be able to control those who you work with and those you don't however I hope that most of us can. But do you choose wisely? Or do you follow the greed; greed for the next sale or the money that will come in with every new client and what that money will be able to bring you - luxuries, commodities, basic necessities, etc.
I'm suggesting that in order to be really fulfilled in life and to feel like you are well balanced and highly successful that you have to sometimes make hard choices.
---- To work with someone or not.
---- To live or stay with someone or not.
---- To associate yourself with someone or not.
You do have a choice. If you believe like I do that "It will all work out in the end", then you can empower yourself to make the choices that are right for you.
For example: Have you ever gotten that feeling in the pit of your stomach that something wasn't totally right when you spoke to a potential client or prospect? Or even when you talk with a friend or family member maybe too - those are the hardest relationships to work through this with.
Why do you think you feel that way? I believe it's because you know they could potentially be somewhat toxic for you to work with or be around. What do you think?
It really is ok to NOT work with someone if it doesn't feel right you know. There are others out there that will meet that person's needs, you don't have to. And is the money you'll gain from that sale or customer really worth the negativity you might have to endure, the extra energy you might have to exude or just the life draining feeling that will pull from you so you won't fully be able to be your "authentic self"?
I encourage you to take a look at your client base and even your friends and family to see where there might be some toxic activity leaking into your brain, yourself and your business. Then I urge you to make some changes and free yourself because when you do, you will begin to attract what is really good for you and your business.

Now we come to Part 3 - Visualization
(a.k.a. - Is Seeing Really Believing?)
Let's get something straight, right off the bat. Visualization is not about "having or not having."
Visualization is about being and doing, which leads to having. It is a powerful tool which is often misused because people focus on the having part.
Mike Dooley (author of the popular "Notes from the Universe" e-mails, and featured expert in "The Secret") is the most passionate speaker we know when it comes to talking about the right way to use the tool of visualization. The central focus of his discussions on this subject are about emotionalization -- this is where the being comes into play.
Let's look at this further.
Downloads for Change co-founder Matthew Walters has an Olympic level athlete as a client, and that client came to him because he had trouble seeing himself
winning the race he was training for. He could see himself in the
finals, but not on the podium.
When we worked with that picture and brought the full range of emotions into the vision, it was suddenly possible to access that part of him that knew how to be a dedicated athlete worthy of the podium.
Automatically, his attitude toward his training
changed. He began to let go of all the distractions and became much
more focused. Because he could see that outcome it suddenly felt
possible and therefore his actions began to reflect that. That is how it always happens. Once we see that we can be who we want to be, we naturally begin to do exactly the kinds of things that person would do. Then, of course, we eventually have the life we desire to live.
That's how it works! Be, then do, then have!
So when visualizing your desired life -- your primary aim -- bring into your mind all of the emotions and textures and feelings that make that life real inside your body. Be that life. Then you'll naturally start doing what it takes. You already know what happens after that.
Final tip! Visualization isn't something that the mind can do for long time periods . . . it's OK if you only spend 5 minutes a day doing this! Or, if you like doing it morning and night, do 5 minutes each time (maximum) for a total of 10. It's that quick, and so powerful.
Enjoy the journey.
Discussion for Comments: What challenges do you have when you visualize? What successes are you having?
We’re on the 2nd in our series on Purpose and Passion in your business (last week we looked at your Primary Aim). This week we’re going in depth into values and motivation and Why We Do What We Do.
Most small business owners don’t take the time to ask themselves why they do what they do. In fact, I would guess that most people haven’t examined their motivation for the choices they make in career or business. Of course there are some things you know about yourself – you like to be your own boss or you like freedom in your schedule, maybe you’re really creative and your business is your outlet or you like to create teams. But have you ever asked yourself why you like those things?
You probably didn’t sit down and write up a list of important values when you were a kid and then took the actions necessary to create that career. Instead you took a job and found you really enjoyed being creative so that ended up on the list. And then you took another job and found you really didn’t like being told when to be where and so freedom to make your own schedule was added the list. And so on down the line.
And this list is operating on the subconscious level in every decision we make. It is there when we decide on a new marketing plan and when we are hiring a new employee. It is there when our business is struggling and it is there when our business is flourishing. So it would benefit you to know what those values are and how they motivate you.
The “what” part is relatively easy. Ask yourself “What is important to me in my business, what motivates me, what gets me out of bed in the morning?” And begin to make a list. Most lists are about 10-12 items long (though yours could be a little shorter or a little longer). Keep it simple. “Creativity” is a simple and precise answer and you probably know what that means to you.
Then number them. 1 being most important and on down the line. Trust your first impulse and if you get stuck just compare them – If I had Freedom but didn’t have Creativity how would that feel? Then ask – If I had Creativity but didn’t have Freedom how would that feel? It will become clear which is more important to you.
Now comes the most important part. Ask yourself “Why is this important to me?” And then notice the language you use. If you stated only positive responses (it feels good, I get excited, etc) then that value motivates you toward inspiration. If you stated only negative responses (I don’t want to be told what to do, I’m not happy unless . . . I don’t want to be poor, etc) then that value motivates you away from discomfort. Some answers may be a combination of both (I get energized and I don’t like too much structure).
You see you make some choices in your businesses because you really feel inspired to move in that direction. Maybe it’s a new product or a marketing idea or even how you feel when you have a good team around you. Whatever it is, when you are inspired then you will feel like working on that part of your business whether it is easy or challenging. You will always be motivated to make it happen.
You also make some choices in your business because you don’t want something bad to happen. Maybe you won’t allow your income to fall below a certain level or you want to make sure to never hire an accountant without references again. Whatever it is, when you are motivated from fear or discomfort then you will get uneven results in your business. Mostly because as soon as you feel comfortable then that value is no longer important to you and you are no longer motivated to take action.
You see if your previous partner cheated on you, you wouldn’t get into business with the first person who came along who you knew wouldn’t cheat, because that person probably won’t have other qualities that are just, if not more, important to your success and happiness. So you don’t want to be making a decision about the long-term success of your business because you don’t want to feel uncomfortable.
Finally let’s talk briefly about your relationship with money. If money (or some version of financial success) isn’t on your values list, I would guess that you are struggling financially. Either your business doesn’t make enough or you spend more than you make. Also, if money is on the list but you want it because you don’t want to be poor, then you will also struggle financially.
Ideally you want to create a values list that makes you feel good and motivates you consistently over time. So take the time to clean up any old, negative emotions around your business. Let go of the anger, sadness, fear and guilt. And create an inspiring vision of what is possible for you.
Now . . . let's put some POWER behind those tools!
This next 3-part series is about taking a look at what drives you to
be productive in your chosen field -- your purpose and your passion. Owning and running
your own business is too much work to be doing it without passion, right?
Purpose and Passion Part 1: Your Primary Aim
That's right, folks . . . the "Big Why" . . . . the "Raison D'Etre" . . . the "Holy Grail / Elixir of Life" that is the goal of your hero's journey in business.
Imagine you've been seated in a world-class restaurant, and as the server approaches to take your order you say, "Bring me whatever the chef is in the mood to cook." Bit of a risk, right? But who knows . . . maybe you'll get lucky!
Imagine you're approaching a high-end auto dealership, and as the sales professional approaches you say, "Give me whichever car the sales manager would want." Bit riskier than the chef scenario, yes?
Imagine you're standing on a pristine 200-acre plot of land that you've just purchased, and as the architect you're hiring walks up you say, "Build whatever you want." This is getting ridiculous!
If that's ridiculous, then what about the millions of people who go into business without any idea about whether or not that particular kind of business will provide them the lifestyle they most want to create?
In Michael Gerber’s powerful book, “The E-Myth Revisited”, he describes the first step in the journey of true entrepreneurial business ownership as the establishment of a Primary Aim.
How do you do it? And how do you know it's right? One step at a time. First, take a couple hours for yourself, if possible in a beautiful location, to relax and write out the answers to these questions:
Who do I wish to be?
What do I want my life to look like?
What's my ideal time schedule and financial position?
You have just written your Primary Aim. It is your joy and your passion -- your purpose for living. And your business is there to support that purpose, not the other way around. Your primary aim will help
you define your values in your business.
We're going to challenge you . . . . are you ready?
The first part of the challenge is to really do this -- really write out your primary aim. But the biggest part of the challenge is to live true to it, even if that means your current business just simply isn't a match for the lifestyle you're creating and the person you're choosing to become. Live true to your primary aim, and let it guide you. Otherwise, you risk a life that's lived without you in it; the real you.
If your primary aim seemed to be centered around money, that's OK. We all know money doesn't buy happiness, it just makes you a little more comfortable
along the way. So if it's money, we simply ask you to dig deeper -- check in with yourself -- and see if money is a benchmark or a place-holder for something else. Common things that money can be a decoy for are: lifestyle, time freedom, security / safety, self-esteem, power / status / influence. What we are suggesting is
that you replace the word money with what you really want.
Knowing what your primary aim is allows you to approach your business in
an entirely different way. You tend to approach everything with the end in mind, and accelerate right through potential obstacles to arrive at your desired life. The most beautiful thing you'll discover is that it's better than you imagined when you arrive -- because of who you've become in the process! Start now.
Are you bold enough to share your primary aim with our community -- to speak it into existence?COMMENT below and you will be supported along your hero's journey!
The last few weeks we discussed 3 key tools for a productive business mindset. And as you implement these ideas into your business, you can notice how that mindset is making you more productive and therefore growing your business.
In this next series we thought we’d take a look at what motivates you to be productive at the business you’ve chosen. We recognize the importance of passion in your business and know that owning and running your own business is too much work to do it for the wrong reasons.
So let’s take a look at the purpose behind all this effort as we examine 3 Mindset Tools for Putting Your Purpose in Your Business.
1. Your Primary Aim or the Reason You Get Out of Bed to Answer all those Emails.
In Michael Gerber’s powerful book, “The E-Myth Revisited”, he describes your primary aim as the answer to the questions Who do I wish to be? and What do I want my life to look like? In a sense he is asking you to look at what do you really want in your life and to make sure that your business is congruent with that vision. That your business is there to support your life, not the other way around. Your primary aim will help you define your values in your business.
Now money can be your primary aim. As you’ve probably heard money does not buy you happiness, but it does make you a little more comfortable along the way. If you dug deeper you would probably discover that money is a stand in for something else, a lifestyle, a certain level of security or even a source of self-esteem. What we are suggesting is that you replace the word money with what you really want.
Knowing what your primary aim is allows you to approach your business in an entirely different way. When you come across difficulties in your business you begin to welcome the challenge, instead of becoming overwhelmed by all of your problems.
2. Directional Motivation or Are You Moving Towards Your Inspiration or Away From Your Discomfort?
Becoming clear on your primary aim puts your business into perspective and you can begin to look at the actions you are taking and why you are taking them. Do you lie in bed thinking about what you get to do today and get excited or do you lie in bed thinking about what you have to do and want to pull the covers over your head?
We are primarily motivated in one of two directions – towards inspiration or away from discomfort. Each has its purpose and if oriented correctly then motivation is not an issue. Let’s take a look at each one and see how it operates.
When we are primarily motivated by discomfort, then the further away from the source of the pain or discomfort we get, the less motivated we are. The more comfortable we are, the less motivated we are. So we get inconsistent results, in our work or business, in our health and in our relationships.
Inspiration motivated people are those self-motivated, ambitious, forward thinking self-starters. The closer they get to achieving their vision, the better they feel and therefore they enjoy getting things done.
This does not mean that all discomfort motivation is bad. This type of motivation is important for recognizing and solving problems. Safety inspectors are motivated by discomfort. You wouldn’t want a police officer visualizing a crime free neighborhood. You want your neighborhood police focused on what is wrong and out of place in order to prevent crime.
However, most of us are not in charge of safety inspection or crime prevention. Most of us want something more from our businesses than we are getting. Knowing how you are motivated to take action in your business will help you create more consistent results and therefore grow your business.
3. Visualization or Is Seeing Really Believing?
Visualization is a powerful tool for growth and change in your life. But many do not understand how it works and therefore don’t utilize it to it’s fullest. The easiest way to understand the effect visualization has on your actions is to examine the common phrase “I just can’t see myself doing that.”
Usually this phrase is used in reference to some activity that you feel you can’t do. Maybe it’s bunging jumping, or climbing a mountain or even making a million dollars. You can’t see yourself doing it. Therefore it feels impossible.
However, if you could see it, if you could see yourself bungee jumping or making a million dollars then it feels very possible. And when something feels very possible then it is easy to take action on that idea.
Visualization is the key to “seeing” yourself doing something. I once worked with an Olympic level athlete and he had trouble seeing himself winning the race he was training for. He could see himself in the finals, but not on the podium. When we worked with that picture and made it possible for him to see himself standing on the podium receiving the gold medal, then suddenly his attitude towards his training changed. He began to let go of all the distractions and became much more focused. Because he could see that outcome it suddenly felt possible and therefore his actions began to reflect that.
What goal do you have trouble seeing? How can you change the picture to see yourself already having what you want? Are you ready to take some action?
Downloads for Change.com is proud to continue our collaboration with the Next For Small Business Team. Thanks so much for all the great comments and communications - we're always happy to help in any way we can.
We're finishing up our 3-part series on the Productivity Mindset, and for those who need to catch up, so far we've talked about:
1 - Affirmations (a.k.a. What Are You Saying to Yourself About Yourself?)
3 - Staying in the Zone (a.k.a. How to Manage Your Emotional State)
Fear, stress, anxiety and frustration are a huge problem for small business owners.
Frustration stops you from getting things done. Fear keeps you from taking the big steps. Stress wears down your resolve.
At least one of these is probably a well-known challenge to you in your business.
But how do you handle it?
Most people, most of the time, don't. Let's talk about that.
There's a lot of discussion in the web space about "anchoring" (an anchor is an association that links a particular thought, sound, picture, or feeling to a desired emotional state; for example, the scent of your ex's perfume or cologne is most likely an anchor to a feeling . . . just maybe not a positive one)
If you've read "NLP: the New Technology of Achievement," which was published by the team at NLP Comprehensive (Steve and Connirae Andreas and the gang) then you know about their "Circle of Excellence" anchoring technique. (Tony Robbins also made powerful use of this approach).
The same benefits of that approach can be received using any anchor that gives you the feeling of being "In the Zone" as a small business owner. Once you've created a powerful anchor, you've got an incredible resource that will pop you out of a funk, if you get in one; or motivate you over an obstacle, if you hit one; or inspire courage in you to face the next step despite your fear, if you feel it.
So here are some of our all-time favorite anchors that keep us In the Zone as entrepreneurs, as a way of triggering possible anchors you might like.
A - Music. Control your emotions by controlling what you're listening to! For funk, go with Stevie's "Superstition." For 80's, go "Footloose." For classical, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries."
B - Movies. You only have to watch that key scene from the right movie, and you're back In the Zone. Favorites for us are the feeling of total freedom to live your dreams that you feel after watching The Shawshank Redemption. Or sometimes it's just about things feeling lighter and happier, which you can't not feel if you watch this.
C - Pictures. You know your vision. You know your dreams. If you haven't surrounded yourself with images that invoke those visions and dreams, you're missing out on a key anchor. Cut out magazine clippings, print out internet images, or do whatever it takes to surround yourself with your highest thoughts for your future - so that you feel it now.
D - Take a Break. As a last resort (or a first . . . what the heck!) get up from the computer, step away from the cell phone, put down the TPS report, and walk away. During that break, you can enjoy the music or movies or pictures that inspire you, or you can just let your mind wander and daydream. Either way, you will definitely regain control of your emotional state, and find yourself back In the Zone.
Discussion Question: What's your favorite kind of anchor? What inspires you and keeps you in the zone? Comment, and let us know!
We love speaking to a live audience. But we realize that we are not like most of you (in fact more people fear public speaking than they do dying). We also want to let you know that we weren't born loving public speaking.
So we put together all the best techniques available to create a powerful program to transform that old fear so that you can get your message out to the world. Dynamic Speaking is the most comprehensive hypnosis mp3 download available.
If you've looked
around the internet, you know that public speaking coaches
charge $149 - $379 for every session or 4-hour seminar they
teach. The problem with that is, they are only
teaching speaking techniques . . . and techniques don't change your
emotions! You have to shift your emotions and become confident
first, and then the techniques can be effective.
Do the steps in the right order and it works every time!
I do a lot of business networking and there is always that moment when you get to speak to the whole group about your business and what you do -- you know, the elevator speech. Well someone invariably expresses how nervous it makes them to get up in front of a group. I invariably respond “I know, I get excited also!”
Physiologically, there is no difference between what both of us are experiencing. We both have shortness of breath, butterflies in our stomachs, rapid heartbeats, adrenaline pumping, sweaty palms, however, we give that physical experience completely different meanings. They think that it is frightening to get up in front of a group and I feel excited anytime I get to share what I do.
So what is going on here? Well physiologically our bodies are preparing themselves for a significant event in which we need to be focused and aware of our surroundings. Mentally and emotionally though, we are doing something completely different. That other person is probably playing the “what if” game. “What if I screw this up?” “What if no one likes me?” “What if I forget something?”
I’m usually thinking about how I can be of service to the people in the room by educating them about what I do and how I can help them or their friends.
You see, I’ve learned a handy little formula that helps me keep things into perspective. Fear minus Danger equals Excitement. I learned a long time ago that when my body gives me a fear response and yet there is no real physical danger (no lions, tigers or bears waiting to eat me) that I’m really feeling excitement.
Think about it this way, when you are in line waiting to ride the latest rollercoaster that flips you up and down and all around, aren’t you feeling excited? Or maybe when you’re in line for the latest sequel of your favorite movie? Or you’re about to sign the lease on that great new car you’ve always wanted? Aren’t you feeling your heart race and your stomach flutter and your palms sweat? So how come you don’t say how afraid you are?
Because you realize there is no real danger and in fact this stuff is a lot of fun.
So here is what I want you to do – the next time you are about to speak in front of a group check out the room. Is there any real danger? No lions or tigers or bears waiting to eat you? Good. Then find a good reason to get excited and get up there and knock them out of their seats.
If you need more help, you can always check out our new hypnosis mp3 download Dynamic Speaking. It will transform all of those old fears into excited confidence and you will just love to share the word.
We’re now in tip #2 of our 3 Key Tools for a Productive Business Mindset. Last week we discussed how to get the most out of your affirmations. This week we get down and dirty about how to manage overwhelm.
How to Manage Overwhelm aka Eating an Elephant One Bite at a Time
Overwhelm really isn’t about the fact that you’ve got way too many to do’s on your to do list. We’ve all got a lot on our plates, yet some seem to manage it with such ease while you struggle to stay focused on the bite at hand. And besides if you wanted less responsibility, you wouldn’t have even contemplated running your own business.
So why is one person overwhelmed and the other busy getting things done? Well, here at Downloads for Change we realize that HOW you think about a problem is the key to whether or not you actually have a problem. Using the most effective mental strategy will greatly diminish the size and scope of your problem.
Those of you stuck in overwhelm usually start out imagining the entire task as one large, looming, undifferentiated mass of work and of course feel overwhelmed. I mean just look at the size of that elephant. Just imagining that whole thing in your stomach can give you indigestion.
If you are clumping together all of the tasks in your business, or even all of the marketing tasks, then you are probably not getting many of them crossed off your to do list. In fact, I would guess that you’re having a hard time even getting motivated to get started. So let’s change the way you see those tasks and get busy getting things done.
Step 1is moving the picture of the task farther away and making it smaller. This makes it feel more manageable and gets the task down to size.
Step 2is to see the whole task completed and then begin to notice what series of smaller steps will lead to completing the entire task.
Step 3involves seeing each one of those smaller tasks completed so that you can begin to feel motivated to do each step one at a time.
Now instead of having one overwhelming task, you have a series of smaller tasks, each one seeming very doable.
The key in breaking these steps down into smaller steps is to make them small enough so that they feel easy to complete. If, after breaking them down, one of the tasks still makes your eyes glaze over and your stomach hurt, ask yourself “what smaller step can I take that can get me closer to my goal and still feel easy to complete?” and then do it or at least put it into your calendar.
The end result is that you have a larger goal in mind, which is further away from you and easier to contemplate. You have a series of small tasks, each of which feels very doable and is marked in your calendar for you to complete. And then you can get to work.
The other great thing about this approach is that you are more flexible if something comes up that was not originally in your plan. When you are focused on that big image and something unexpected pops up, you can get knocked completely off your path. However, if you are focused on these smaller, bite size tasks, then you can easily incorporate the new information into your plan.
Remember, HOW you are thinking about your problem is what is causing the problem.
Clumping everything together into a large, indefinable mass = Overwhelm.
Breaking it down into bite size tasks that feel easy to accomplish = Success.
So just keep breaking those tasks into smaller and smaller bites and the next thing you know your contemplating eating that whale in front of you. Elephants are so last year.
Enjoy the journey!
Got ideas of your own to deal with overwhelm? COMMENT and let our DFC community know about them! Then proceed to Part 3 of this Series
Last week we delivered a brief overview of the 3 Key Tools for a Productive Business Mindset. That's great for starters, but let's dig deeper into each step - one at a time.
This week: Affirmations
(a.k.a. - what you are saying to yourself about yourself)
Have you read about the scientists who used other scientists as their subjects, by setting up an experiment for them to run? They told one group about the expected results of the experiment. The other group was told to run the identical experiment, but they told them to expect completely different results. Each group - running the exact same experiment - got data that supported the result they were told to expect.
Then there's the Pepsi Challenge: a blind study where people said they liked Pepsi better. So Coke hires an independent company to run challenges as well, but in their challenge they keep the label on the can so you know what you're drinking. Suddenly people prefer Coke (an updated version of this study showed through fMRI imaging that this result occurred because the Coke brand triggered their reward centers more than Pepsi's logo prior to their taste receptors ever sensing the beverage!)
If expectation is so powerful - that is, if we humans are wired to find a way to make our expectations turn into our actual experiences - then what are you doing to create expectations to support your business?
Lately, our team has been studying Dan Ariely's "Predictably Irrational". This book, similar to Malcolm Gladwell's "Tipping Point," "Blink," and "Outliers," describes case studies that show how frequently (and predictably) human behavior is entirely different than what we would rationally expect.
It turns out that our expectations have everything to do with our "imprinting" - in other words, the thoughts that we think right before we take action; our "primer."
In one study, college students are asked to rearrange short sentences, so that they make sense. "Play to bingo like I" becomes "I like to play bingo." "Florida often we in vacation" becomes "We often vacation in Florida." The experiment, it turns out, began when they left the room and began walking down the hall toward the exit. They timed the pace of these healthy college students who had focused on "old folks words" like bingo and Florida vs. the walking pace of students who rearranged completely neutral sentences -- the "old folks" college students moved drastically slower!
These experiments were repeated with beer and food preferences, with thoughts about race and gender relations, and with self-concepts related to talent in math, science, and business.
By now, you can probably see (or maybe we're just suggesting that you can, so that you expect to see) how your thoughts and words powerfully affect your expectations (and we've already proven that what you expect is exactly what you will find a way to get - your brain is wired this way!)
Daily affirmations, like the kind touted in "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, can be read out loud in the morning as a great primer to set your expectations for the day. They can be re-stated again right before a big meeting, or a sales presentation, or right before you sit down to be productive for the day (or if you use time-blocking the way Todd Duncan suggests, then have different affirmations to create specific types of productivity for each time block!)
Affirmation = Expectation = Results -- isn't it awesome to know that you can engineer your own results? Just keep repeating the affirmation, taking action with the expectation of your desired outcome, and then notice it as it's arriving!
Enjoy the journey!
Got ideas of your own to strengthen affirmations? COMMENT and let our DFC community know about them! Then proceed to Part 2 of this Series.
Thanks so much for commenting, Adam! Things are great here in SoCal, and I hope NorCal is treating you well. I'd love to hear more about the CPR Classes you're teaching, and if that's still in Milpitas or if you've moved. Keep me posted! - - Brennan
