Now . . . let's put some POWER behind those tools!
This next 3-part series is about taking a look at what drives you to be productive in your chosen field -- your purpose and your passion. Owning and running your own business is too much work to be doing it without passion, right?
Purpose and Passion Part 1: Your Primary Aim
That's right, folks . . . the "Big Why" . . . . the "Raison D'Etre" . . . the "Holy Grail / Elixir of Life" that is the goal of your hero's journey in business.
Imagine you've been seated in a world-class restaurant, and as the server approaches to take your order you say, "Bring me whatever the chef is in the mood to cook." Bit of a risk, right? But who knows . . . maybe you'll get lucky!Imagine you're approaching a high-end auto dealership, and as the sales professional approaches you say, "Give me whichever car the sales manager would want." Bit riskier than the chef scenario, yes?
Imagine you're standing on a pristine 200-acre plot of land that you've just purchased, and as the architect you're hiring walks up you say, "Build whatever you want." This is getting ridiculous!
If that's ridiculous, then what about the millions of people who go into business without any idea about whether or not that particular kind of business will provide them the lifestyle they most want to create?
In Michael Gerber’s powerful book, “The E-Myth Revisited”, he describes the first step in the journey of true entrepreneurial business ownership as the establishment of a Primary Aim. How do you do it? And how do you know it's right? One step at a time. First, take a couple hours for yourself, if possible in a beautiful location, to relax and write out the answers to these questions:
- Who do I wish to be?
- What do I want my life to look like?
- What's my ideal time schedule and financial position?
We're going to challenge you . . . . are you ready?
The first part of the challenge is to really do this -- really write out your primary aim. But the biggest part of the challenge is to live true to it, even if that means your current business just simply isn't a match for the lifestyle you're creating and the person you're choosing to become. Live true to your primary aim, and let it guide you. Otherwise, you risk a life that's lived without you in it; the real you.
If your primary aim seemed to be centered around money, that's OK. We all know money doesn't buy happiness, it just makes you a little more comfortable along the way. So if it's money, we simply ask you to dig deeper -- check in with yourself -- and see if money is a benchmark or a place-holder for something else. Common things that money can be a decoy for are: lifestyle, time freedom, security / safety, self-esteem, power / status / influence. What we are suggesting is that you replace the word money with what you really want.
Knowing what your primary aim is allows you to approach your business in an entirely different way. You tend to approach everything with the end in mind, and accelerate right through potential obstacles to arrive at your desired life. The most beautiful thing you'll discover is that it's better than you imagined when you arrive -- because of who you've become in the process! Start now.
