3 Mindset Tools for Putting Your Purpose in Your Business

Matthew Walters - Wednesday, May 05, 2010
The last few weeks we discussed 3 key tools for a productive business mindset.  And as you implement these ideas into your business, you can notice how that mindset is making you more productive and therefore growing your business.

In this next series we thought we’d take a look at what motivates you to be productive at the business you’ve chosen.  We recognize the importance of passion in your business and know that owning and running your own business is too much work to do it for the wrong reasons.

So let’s take a look at the purpose behind all this effort as we examine 3 Mindset Tools for Putting Your Purpose in Your Business.

1.  Your Primary Aim or the Reason You Get Out of Bed to Answer all those Emails.

In Michael Gerber’s powerful book, “The E-Myth Revisited”, he describes your primary aim as the answer to the questions Who do I wish to be? and What do I want my life to look like?  In a sense he is asking you to look at what do you really want in your life and to make sure that your business is congruent with that vision.  That your business is there to support your life, not the other way around.  Your primary aim will help you define your values in your business.

Now money can be your primary aim.  As you’ve probably heard money does not buy you happiness, but it does make you a little more comfortable along the way.  If you dug deeper you would probably discover that money is a stand in for something else, a lifestyle, a certain level of security or even a source of self-esteem.  What we are suggesting is that you replace the word money with what you really want.

Knowing what your primary aim is allows you to approach your business in an entirely different way.  When you come across difficulties in your business you begin to welcome the challenge, instead of becoming overwhelmed by all of your problems.

2.  Directional Motivation or Are You Moving Towards Your Inspiration or Away From Your Discomfort?

Becoming clear on your primary aim puts your business into perspective and you can begin to look at the actions you are taking and why you are taking them.  Do you lie in bed thinking about what you get to do today and get excited or do you lie in bed thinking about what you have to do and want to pull the covers over your head?

We are primarily motivated in one of two directions – towards inspiration or away from discomfort.  Each has its purpose and if oriented correctly then motivation is not an issue.  Let’s take a look at each one and see how it operates.

When we are primarily motivated by discomfort, then the further away from the source of the pain or discomfort we get, the less motivated we are.  The more comfortable we are, the less motivated we are.  So we get inconsistent results, in our work or business, in our health and in our relationships.

Inspiration motivated people are those self-motivated, ambitious, forward thinking self-starters.  The closer they get to achieving their vision, the better they feel and therefore they enjoy getting things done.

This does not mean that all discomfort motivation is bad.  This type of motivation is important for recognizing and solving problems.  Safety inspectors are motivated by discomfort.  You wouldn’t want a police officer visualizing a crime free neighborhood.  You want your neighborhood police focused on what is wrong and out of place in order to prevent crime.

However, most of us are not in charge of safety inspection or crime prevention.  Most of us want something more from our businesses than we are getting.  Knowing how you are motivated to take action in your business will help you create more consistent results and therefore grow your business.

3.  Visualization or Is Seeing Really Believing?

Visualization is a powerful tool for growth and change in your life.  But many do not understand how it works and therefore don’t utilize it to it’s fullest.  The easiest way to understand the effect visualization has on your actions is to examine the common phrase “I just can’t see myself doing that.”

Usually this phrase is used in reference to some activity that you feel you can’t do.  Maybe it’s bunging jumping, or climbing a mountain or even making a million dollars.  You can’t see yourself doing it.  Therefore it feels impossible.

However, if you could see it, if you could see yourself bungee jumping or making a million dollars then it feels very possible.  And when something feels very possible then it is easy to take action on that idea.

Visualization is the key to “seeing” yourself doing something.  I once worked with an Olympic level athlete and he had trouble seeing himself winning the race he was training for.  He could see himself in the finals, but not on the podium.  When we worked with that picture and made it possible for him to see himself standing on the podium receiving the gold medal, then suddenly his attitude towards his training changed.  He began to let go of all the distractions and became much more focused.  Because he could see that outcome it suddenly felt possible and therefore his actions began to reflect that.

What goal do you have trouble seeing?  How can you change the picture to see yourself already having what you want?  Are you ready to take some action?

5 Steps for Developing Self Confidence and Self Esteem

5 Steps for Developing Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem

What do you do for love?  What about acceptance?  Do you turn yourself into a pretzel hoping people will like and accept you?  Many of us play status games in our minds taking note of who we are better than and who we are lesser than.  And then we twist ourselves up into whatever shape we think the people we want to impress will find attractive.

Wouldn’t it be great to feel comfortable in your own body?  To accept all of you, even the ugly parts?  We are all perfectly human and it is that human part of us that makes us loveable.  Isn’t it time that you learned to love all the parts of you that make you who you are?

It is in loving those parts of ourselves that we begin the process of change.  And it is in that change that we start to develop self-esteem (i.e. regarding yourself highly or favorably with respect or admiration).  When you hold value for yourself then you begin to stand up for your needs in relationships, you ask for what you want and need in your work and you feel good about who you are and the choices you have made.

So today we want to share 5 steps for developing self-confidence and self-esteem.

1.  Rewriting the Story of Who You Are

Write down two versions of your life story.  One will be all of the bad things that happened and all of your failures and the other will be all of the good things that happened and all of your successes.  Once you are done notice which list you give most of your attention to.  Realize that you are the one who chose which events were important to shaping who you are.  Make a decision to focus on the memories that make you feel good about who you are.  You’re the one who gets to decide how you want to define yourself, not your family, your friends, your teachers or bosses, not even your spouse.

2.  What are You Saying to Yourself About Yourself?

Negative self-talk is a strong factor in how you feel about yourself.  It is difficult to feel good about yourself when you are constantly criticizing yourself.  So notice how you talk to yourself.  What tone of voice do you use?  Is it your voice or someone else’s?  What does it say?  Imagine that voice coming from your favorite cartoon character.  Now what if it is coming from a small speaker and it begins to sound really tinny?  Maybe there is even static and the voice becomes difficult to hear.  And it could even have some really funny music behind it, maybe like the theme to a cartoon or funny circus music.

Now what if instead you imagined a sweet, rich full voice saying, “I love and appreciate myself and all that I am.”  Doesn’t that sound a lot better?

3.  Begin to Tackle Your List of Faults

Using compassion, write down a list of your bad habits.  Choose one and take the next few weeks or months to overcome it.  Now go down the list and choose another.  Take the next few weeks or months to overcome it.  Rinse and repeat.  You’ll be surprised how many habits you can change in a year when you take them on one at a time.  You’ll also feel great about yourself when you look over the year and see what you’ve accomplished.

4.  Ask Yourself a Different Question

The one question we ask ourselves that gets in the way of feeling good is “Why”.  As in “Why did that     happen to me?”  “Why doesn’t that person like me?” “Why do I feel this way?”  Instead, the key is to get outside of yourself and become curious about your feelings.  “Isn’t that interesting that I’m feeling that old feeling again.  How would I like to feel?”  “What do I need to learn in order to become more confident in this area?”  “I wonder why this is coming up for me again?  What is here for me to learn?”

Take your focus away from yourself and towards the outside world.  Let go of wondering what other people think of you.  Confidence comes from inside you not from the outside world.

5.  Take on a new Challenge

Take a public speaking course, learn to rock climb, learn to cook or make pottery,     run a marathon or a triathlon, learn a new language; there are millions of new things to learn and taking the time and effort to learn them actually makes you feel good because you’ve accomplished something.

Make a list of new things you would like to learn and get to work learning them one at a time.  It is always best not to overload yourself as that almost always leads to failure.  So set yourself up to win by focusing on one thing at a time and see how quickly you move through the list.

You can also check out our hypnosis mp3 program “Free to Be Me” which leads you through several powerful processes that develop self-confidence and self-esteem.  And there is a bonus affirmation track that you can listen to all day to keep you focused on what you are creating.  Reprogramming your subconscious habit of negative self-talk will allow you to step into that new vision of who you really are, which is a limitless, infinitely loveable person.  Now, how does that feel?

5 Reasons Water Can Help You Lose Weight

DFC Team - Thursday, April 23, 2009
Today we want to talk about how important water is to weight loss.  Really, water?  You might be thinking.  Well the evidence is out there and it is very compelling.  Now, this doesn’t mean that you can eat what you want and not do any exercise, but if you drink lots of water then you will lose weight.  There are no magic solutions.  However, it does mean that if you are exercising regularly and eating well, then drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day can make a huge difference.

Here’s a few reasons water is an important component to you weight loss program:

1.  Water helps with metabolism.

Your liver is the organ that is in charge of metabolizing fat into energy.  Your liver also assists your kidneys in removing toxins from the body.  If your kidneys are water-deprived then your liver has to take up the slack, getting in the way of it metabolizing fat.  A hydrated body allows kidney and liver functions to normalize, and allows you to burn more fat more easily.

A recent study in Germany supports this idea. After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects' metabolic rates -- or the rate at which calories are burned -- increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes.

2.  Water reduces your appetite.

Drinking water before you eat takes up space in your stomach, leading to that full feeling faster.  If that water is cold, it will cause your stomach to shrink a little, allowing you to feel full even faster.  Cold water also requires more energy to process in your body.  Besides we often are confused about how hungry we really are.  Often times that hungry feeling is really your body telling you that you need to drink some water.

3.  Drinking water enhances your workout results.

Muscles need water to function properly, especially during exercise.  Properly hydrated muscles are more toned and flexible.  They also contract more easily, making your workout more effective and your body more toned.

4.  Drinking water enhances your self-esteem.

Water flushes impurities from your skin, giving you a clear, glowing complexion.  Also, hydrated skin cells firm up and make you look younger.  How can you not feel good about yourself when your skin is clear and you already look younger.

5.  Drinking more water actually helps prevent water retention.

If your body is deprived of water, it is more likely to hold onto what little it has. On the other hand, increasing your water intake will cause your body to stop holding onto its limited supplies. Some people can lose up to 3-4 lbs. of weight shortly after increasing how much water they drink.  Of course you will be going to the bathroom more than usual for the first 3-4 days, but once your body gets releases all the excess water it has been storing, then you will go back to normal.

So, stop reading and go have a drink of water.  When you get back we’ll tell you about our new hypnosis mp3 new program that we are really excited about.
